With the generous support of Bryan Super Walmart, Paradowski Law will once again give away new bikes to deserving children in our community. Although Christmas Bikes for Kids is on its 15th year, its beginning traces back almost 20 years when Jeff Paradowski was contacted by a Bryan elementary school teacher about a few students who were not expected to receive any gifts that year. We jumped at the opportunity to purchase bicycles at Bryan Super Walmart to give the children. It felt so good, we continued to buy more bikes every year. One year, Larry Beavers, the manager of the Bryan Super Wal-Mart, approached Jeff and after hearing about the project offered to help in future years. For some of these kids, the bicycle may be the only thing they get. The children who receive bikes are selected from the applications we receive from throughout the area. Each application is carefully screened. The bike giveaway has taken off with more and more people wanting to help, and it is such a joy to share the excitement with so many kids each year. At Fannin Elementary School, 31 students were presented with bicycles from Academy Sports and Outdoors, and children throughout the area received bikes from Wal-Mart through attorney Jeff Paradowskis 14th annual Christmas Bikes for Kids event. In addition to the bicycles, all the students received helmets — those at Fannin received helmets from Academy, while Brooke and Andy Harrington provided them at Christmas Bikes for Kids. Each of the students who received bicycles Friday afternoon at Paradowskis event also received a pair of sneakers from Shoe Angels, a local nonprofit started by Bryan-based Global Event Group owner Matt Bobbitt. To select the 31 students at Fannin who received bicycles, those who had perfect attendance and did not have any behavior referrals were put into a bag with 31 names drawn. The behaviors easy to get by itself, but the two of them combined are a little more difficult, Fannin Elementary School Principal Becky Ryberg said. Theyre working hard every year. Their families earned it, and I think thats the biggest thing to be able to give their parents a little bit of help — surprise help — for just being a great family and doing what parents should do. Ryberg saw the bicycle donation as a way to reward students who are well-behaved and make it a point to attend school every day. Those students sometimes might fall through the cracks when it comes to recognition, she said. Alison Mooney, regional marketing specialist for Academy, described it as exciting and fun to bring bike donations to students and help them celebrate the holidays. Noting the perfect attendance and behavior eligibility requirements, Mooney said, Its just really nice to reward and thank those kids for doing a good job for their community. Academy has participated in bike donations for 15 years and has done donations in the Bryan-College Station area for the past seven or so. Academy had partnered with the now-closed Milam Elementary School for bike donations when Ryberg was assistant principal and approached Academy about starting the partnership again with Fannin. I would love to help you, she said. As the program continues, Mooney said, she hopes the donations keep generating excitement for the students. A mom herself, Mooney said, it means a lot to her to be able to take part in such an event close to the holidays. Though Christmas Bikes for Kids is in its 14th year, the history of it goes back about another four years, when Paradowski was contacted by a Bryan elementary school staff member about a handful of students who were not expecting to get any gifts that year. They gave me this wonderful photo album afterwards, a few weeks later. It was just really cool. For a couple years, I did that. I think one year, I brought like 10 bikes, he said. Why dont we get crazy, and do like bikes? Its just kind of stuck. The children who receive bikes are not limited to one city, but are selected from the applications Paradowskis law office receives from throughout the area.
