Ive always understood it to be the case that apps could permit users to log in or use a code to access paid content, as long as the app did not direct the user to an external web site to make a purchase. For example, apps like Netflix or Kindle. My app isnt even doing anything close to this. I have an app in which digital content is unlocked via in-app purchase. Occasionally I give away promo codes that allow a user to unlock one free piece of content. These codes can only be used once, and are distributed in very limited numbers on cards, in person, at events like trade shows. My app has been in the store for about four years using this method. This week I attempted to publish a small bug-fix update, and was flagged by Apple and told that my use of Promo Codes in this manner violates the rules. What happened here? Did Apple misunderstand what my app is doing? Did the rules change recently and I was unaware of the change? Has this always been against the rules, but either Apple didnt enforce it before or they never reviewed my app thorougly enough to find it? The rules have never changed. Apple should have rejected you 4 years ago. Using coupons to unlock IAPs is not allowed as per the guidelines. Ok, but I fail to understand how apps like Netflix and Kindle are allowed then. Isnt your Amazon password just like a coupon code? Whats the difference? If I changed my app to say enter your username and password, and I gave away usernames and passwords instead of coupon codes, would that work? The App Review Board evaluated your app and determined that the original rejection feedback is valid. Your app does not comply with. While we understand that codes are not sold, using codes to unlock digital content or features in your app is not appropriate on the App Store. My main complaint is that there are many, many, many apps in the app store where users can enter a special code to get access to content that users without the code cannot access. The other apps Amazon, Netflix, etc require you to pay money for their codes. My app doesnt. It seems to me that if I simply called my code an account, Id be doing the same thing as those other apps. Either that, or Apple needs to remove those apps from the app store as well, in order to apply the same rule to everyone. Wouldnt you agree? As well, comparing to amazon and netflix is, well, you know Perhaps in your case, you were first blood in a new restriction that coincidentally went live just as your app hit the front of the queue. In any case, I feel that once an app has been flagged and twice rejected for the same cause, there isnt much to be done short of a lengthy visit to the hairdresser. I dont think Apple wants to be seen as a company that gives bigger developers an unfair advantage by letting them break the rules. I just think that they inadvertently created a contradictory rule when they said no promo codes but still allow apps with logins. It isnt just a matter of big or small either, as I have worked on several small apps that let users log in with accounts that they paid for externally. Do you really think there is only one set of rules? You cant break rules that dont apply to you. Apple wouldnt be alone in the industry by allowing big houses concierge status – this isnt new. Might be a matter of expectations as well, where app store devs arent as high on the list as some would like to think they are. Dont get me wrong I feel your pain, but were just fodder for the store, after all. Again, an app can act as a reader app and most apps that you reference Amazon, Netflix are doing that. If you find an app that is doing more with coupons than you are welcome to report them to Apple. Here is Guideline 3. Was it approved with promo code or they simply ask to remove it from app first in order to get approval? Your app does not comply with Business 3. In order to resolve this issue, please remove all code entry from your app. Most of these apps refer to this code as an account. My app calls it a promo code. But its the same thing. Id agree that Apple is in charge of the store, sure. My app is certainly in full compliance with rule 3. I will point this out to Apple.
